Parallel Lives

The Science

I created a "chaotic design template" using properties of chaos theory such as fractal geometry, the golden ratio, and the concept of finding "order within chaos". The template is similar to how one would use a stencil of circles and squares, except this is for zig-zag patterns and perspective. It can be used in many ways to extract orderly patterns and shapes or chaotic ones (where no pattern repeats).

One of the interesting features of this template is that the zig zag lines converge towards the center (Y axis) just as electricity does in the Tesla Coil. The X axis levels are like pieces of reflective glass for the lines to bounce off and their path continues uninterrupted until it reaches the centre. These levels are based on measurements of 1/2, 1/3, and phi.

The shapes created by the intersection lines are fractals of the golden ratio and feel harmonious to the natural movement of electricity or energy.

In my “Parallel Lives” drawing, I replaced two sections of the structure with narrative imagery. The zig-zag lines here represent a symbolic "tear" in the fabric of space to reveal two different worlds, as if energy has crystallized into these forms. The title gives context to the image but it is open to interpretation.

The Artist

Ana Bagayan is an artist and illustrator from Los Angeles, CA. She earned her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. She began her career as a published illustrator for magazines such as SPIN and Rolling Stone and has been exhibiting her work in galleries world wide, from Los Angeles to Tokyo.

Her passion for science fuels her current work, which fuses the practical science of Chaos with traditional art techniques to create dynamic and meaningful imagery
