There was nothing else left
Mark Grundy
The Science
This oil painting brings in a dystopic vision of the world, a desolate place where the natural is a rarity. Dressed in protective gear to assure no direct contact, a crop scientist from the future, perhaps a food engineer, studies closely the last remnant of a naturally grown fruit. The scientist focuses on a pear, trying to understand it/describe its functionality better, oblivious to his/her surroundings. The world behind him/her is desolate, engulfed in the fumes of contamination, uncertainty and grey indifference. The painting exudes the preoccupation for the accelerated environmental and human degradation across the world. It questions both our methods (how do we study Nature? To what extent can you isolate a phenomenon from the natural system as a whole) and the scale (how does our research fit into the bigger picture?) of our research interests and findings.
