Emergence

Maureen Manning

Artwork part of ‘Change’ (Issue 20)

The Science

This is an artistic expression of the biological life cycle. Many life forms start with an egg or a seed. There is growth, development, and emergence. We are surrounded by life cycles in plants, insects, and animals. As humans, we are forever growing, learning, developing, and changing throughout our lives. And, each developmental stage holds beauty.

The Medium

This piece is a finely cut collage with an inked background overlaid on a small photograph known as a carte de visite (CdV). The CdV dates to the late 1800s and measures 4.0” x 2.5”. This portrait was created by photographer A.B. Clinton in Port Mackay, Queensland, Australia between 1884-1986. The photographer chose the CdV template much like one would choose a business card layout. Additional details have been added with ink and pencil.

Artist Bio

Maureen Manning is an artist and biologist who lives in western Massachusetts, in the United States. In her artwork, she entwines old photographs with her love of the natural world. Inspired by the fine details and colors she observes in her garden and the nearby woods where she walks, her work evokes a sense of being lost in nature and lost in time.
